There could be more! Some of the things we do need more time, others a little. The fact remains that allocating time to all we need to do from just 24 hours is quite challenging. People have devised means to make the best use of their time, yet there seems never to be enough time for everything. We will be considering "managing time" based on what is obtainable in different countries.
In developing countries: work takes almost 70% of time, leaving about 30% for a whole lot of other things. But the truth is, there is always a chance of giving everything the time they deserve. You only need to determine what should be given more or less attention.
Some needs don't matter daily, but others do, and leisure mingle with necessities now and then. For instance, your job brings you home at 10pm, the next day you should resume by 8am. You have to grab dinner, shower, and go to bed. It usually takes you -
Shower-30 minutes
Dinner-40 minutes
Sleep-6 hours
But all of a sudden a program pops up on the TV, and you got captivated. About an hour plus passed before you realized what time it was. However, you must wake at 5:10 am. Do you see that the already suffering necessity (sleep) has suffered more. Therefore, the best thing to do is-
- Make a to do list
- Separate wants and needs
- Stick to the list
In developed countries: working hourly does not mean that you have all the time. It means that you have a better opportunity to manage your time. If you are running 2 shifts of 3 hours each, and have a class of 3 hours. It's a 9 hours routine liable to interruption and mismanagement. Education and work alone have taken 9 hours out of the 24 you've got. You only have 15 hours left for the rest of your activities. And it seems here that the priorities are (education and work), definitely you would not have a problem sticking to it.
The question therefore is; how do you manage the remaining 15 hours to serve other needs?
- Take another priority out of the time
- Weigh what is left
- Assign them time according to their weight
Generally speaking: Time management requires that you make
- Applicable plan,
- Put every necessity in its perspective
- Know what is worth a sacrifice.
Drawing a personal time table consisting of your activities, priorities and what could be sacrificed will help you. The time table below will help you to learn how to set your time goals.
Using this table's example, you should understand that it all ends in making applicable table. Emergencies could alter your time schedule, then you will need to make a sacrifice of time. The best thing to sacrifice is leisure. But it does not always come into play, therefore, you have to choose from your priorities.
- Important things should never be assigned to your spare time
- Create time for everything that is worth doing
- Execute your tasks to beat the time
- Scrap undeserving activities to make up for lost time.
