In simple terms, to sell something is to make someone who has the ability to pay for it, desire it to the extent of giving up his money for it. This does not just happen, not even when the product is unarguably the best. It takes a process for a buyer to get convinced about what you are selling and be willing to pay for it. If you understand it this way, then we can move on to see the little important things involved in selling just anything.
Make Sure What You Are Selling Is Good
You cannot easily sell something that is not good enough. Sales begin with the quality of your product. Do all the promotion and try all the enticing things you can, if your product is not good, you will not sell. Make sure your product/service is of good quality. Good quality products naturally sell easily.
Have A Sound Knowledge Of What You Sell
When you want someone to be convinced that a product is good, you must not give that person any reason to doubt your knowledge of it. As soon as the buyer is able to ask you a few questions about the product and you are unable to answer, you naturally put him off.
Be sure you know the name, the make-up (raw materials), the manufacturing company and most especially, the uses/benefits of the product. If there are any precautions, know them and be able to tell the buyer.
Present The Product Well
The way you present anything, goes a long way to play on the psychology of the buyer and motivate him/her to buy it or not. People love things well-presented. Present your product neatly and attractively and you will naturally win the interest of the buyer.
Presenting a product does not only end with the product but also has to do with presenting yourself in a way that does not contradict the product. For example, it makes no sense, selling a new brand of toothpaste which you claim is very effective, whereas, you who sells it, has stained teeth. You cannot be a barber and trying to sell your services while your hair is not properly cut. You are the first promoter of your product. Present yourself neatly, speak clearly, and make sure you don’t contradict what you sell.
Don’t Underestimate Any Buyer
As different people come in contact with you and what you have to sell, you will soon be able to predict the kind of persons who will end up buying what you sell. You may know this from the way they speak, their complaints, attitude, their body language, etc. But no matter what you think about any particular person or group of persons, avoid prejudices. You are allowed to conclude in your mind who will buy and who will not; but you must never allow your conclusions to determine the way you receive any buyer.
Sometimes your predictions will prove wrong. So don’t fully trust in them. Treat all who come in contact with your product, as a potential buyer and do all to make them get what you offer. Treat buyers with equal care and respect and no matter their individual financial strength, value them equally.
Create A Good Rapport
This applies more when you are taking the product to the buyer. It is easier when a buyer comes to you to get your product. When that is the case, the buyer is most often not interested in familiarization and all the informal gestures. Go straight to discuss the product. However, when you have to present the product, you need to be skillful in creating a good rapport. Read my post titled “How To Create A Good Rapport” for more on this.
Listen A lot
You must have been told that, a good marketer is one who knows how to speak well. I tell you, a good marketer is one who knows how to listen well, speak right and then speak well.
When a buyer is speaking, he/she demands attention from you. You must learn how to give attention to someone speaking, even if you think he/she is saying nothing. When you listen, also observe. People speak even when they don’t use words. Their posture, facial expression, attitude and other body gestures will tell you a lot, if you are keen enough to observe.
Don’t Lose Focus
While you need to be concerned about the buyer, you need not lose focus on what you are after. Some people will divert your focus from the product to their complaints and worries. They will narrate all kinds of stories and unless you are focused, you will soon get carried away. In your mind, allocate time to each buyer. Don’t give a buyer more than he/she needs in order to make a decision. As soon as you realize that the buyer is taking you both very far off from the issue at hand, be tactful to bring you both, back to the product.
Focus On The Benefits Of The Product
When you discuss the product, spend most of the time on the benefits. While all the other things are important, the most important thing to the buyer is how the product will give him added value.
Have you come across a salesperson pleading with people to buy his product and promote his business? Some will even say they have not had food to eat and so if you could buy their product, they will be able to eat. That is selfish and all together nonsense! People don’t want to pay for a product to promote your business or put food on your table. They have a need they seek to meet and they will only pay for your product when they are guaranteed of fulfillment. Tell them how what you have, will be of great benefit to them, and they will use that knowledge to make a decision.
Be Honest and Transparent
Overcome the temptation of being dishonest in order to convince someone to buy what you have. In fact, if your product is a good one in the first place, you will not need to be dishonest. We are dishonest when we don’t have a good thing to offer.
Sometimes your buyer will be concerned about the side-effects, other buyers’ experiences, the make-up and the expiration of the product, etc. Don’t fake stories. Smart buyers will know and that will play seriously against you. When you are not sure, say you are not sure. When you don’t know, say you don’t know. And the things you know make them loud.
Be Patient
Selling is not for impatient people. Buyers always require that you be patient with them. They have doubts, concerns, fears, worries and questions which need to be cleared. For you to sell your product, you don’t have to ignore them and their concerns. Sometimes they may even be expressing a worry that has nothing to do with what you are selling. Be patient to listen and sympathize with them. When you do so, you send a message that you genuinely care about the buyer and not just after making your money.
Give your buyers, enough time to make a decision about your product. When people are allowed to take their time and make a decision, they feel more confident about what they are buying and who they are dealing with. Don’t put pressure on a buyer to pay for a product. Don’t express your desperateness for their money. Be concerned about pleasing them.
Appreciate Them
People will sometimes not make a decision to buy what you sell, immediately. Some will try other places and may later decide to come back to you. When you treat them nicely, your treatment could be their only reason for their coming back again. This may sound too mean a reason but I tell you, we all fall into this trap. We always go back where we were treated with love.
For someone to consider buying from you, he/she must have trusted you somehow. Even if they end up not buying your product, appreciate them at least for their time and trust.
When you apply the above tips, you will be able to sell easily. But remember, what you sell is more important than any other thing, to the buyer. Make sure your product is good.

ReplyDeleteHi Joseph, making a choice on what trade to learn would depend on a few factors including where you are, where you intend to be in the next 5-10 years and even more, and so on. There are many nice trades. Let me hope that those who are more versed in this will come here and give you some great advice on this.
DeleteJoseph, reading some other articles on this website will help you decide on what to learn. Example is this article: Handworks you can learn in Nigeria within a month read and see if there is anyone suitable to your circumstances.
DeletePlease sir list the ones you know handworks that are highly sought after currently
DeleteI love this article for its simplicity. I must say these are secrets that every salesperson needs to know. I went to buy an electronic the other day and when I mentioned the amount I wanted to pay for it, the owner of the shop insultingly seized it from my hand and put it to the shelve. I walked out from that shop and never came back nor recommended someone to it. People are really losing so much money because of lack of truths as is revealed here. Thanks KC Great and the entire crew of Wealth Results for the good work. You're making a huge difference in the lives of so many people.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Mr. Tah for taking time to read it and commenting. I wish everyone who is in one form of business or the other, could know these. Well, for now all we can do is to keep sensitizing and teaching those who care to learn.
DeleteI will like to be at a great level pls list some trades
