How to Make Flying Paper Lantern

Provided by Ose Daniel. Flying lantern - What is that in the skies? No, that’s not superman and yes it looks magical but they are not made by magic spells. In contrast, they can be made by almost anyone who is trained on the craft.

They are called flying lanterns and are relatively new in the Nigerian market. Services like Fireflyz Art -Nigeria train individuals via their very affordable one to one live or online training. You can start a flying lanterns craft business with as low as N5, 000.

Though most of us have only seen them in foreign movies, flying lanterns have been used in many parts of the World for decades. Flying lanterns were first used by Chinese soldiers to send signals during war, now dozens of Chinese manufacturers gross millions of dollars yearly from exporting flying lanterns to wholesalers in different countries of the world.

Flying Lanterns are known by several names from wishing lantern to fireflies or sky lantern. They work with the same principle as hot air balloons. When lit with fire they rise and fly into the skies, hence the name “flying lantern”. They only come down when the fuel is exhausted and the fire quenches.

Uses - Flying lanterns are used for a wide variety of purposes from wedding receptions (as seen in Wizkid’s “on top your matter” video) to wake keepings, to taking fun photos. They can be used for advertising purposes, for example, the new Maltina “feel good” TV commercial.

Flying lanterns are spectacular when used as fireworks (large number of flying lanterns are flown at the same time) especially during festive months like December. They can be combined with other fireworks like firecrackers to create especially beautiful moments.

The beautiful thing about these lanterns is since they work just like magic and since not so many people have seen them, they are great for brand advertising, awareness campaigns, peaceful protests, political rallies and VIP events. In occasions, they can serve as great ice-breakers, helping people start conversations very easily.

Precautions when using a Flying Lantern

Do not use flying lanterns under overhead wires or close to tall buildings because they may fly towards that direction.

Windy conditions do not help flying lanterns because wind pushes the body of the lantern into the fire and pushes hot air out.

Flying lanterns can be used with tread tied to it for control.

Locally made lanterns are better when it comes to safety because local designers put our living condition (e.g. atmospheric conditions, presence of overhead wires etc.) into consideration in the design process.
