How To Survive Harsh Economy Through Ice Block Selling In Nigeria

The world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can’t be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it” Elbert Hubbard. While the epidemic power supply in the nation has crippled many business, its mere existence can serve as an advantage for those who go out of their way to power their business without relying on the electricity supply by the  government, one of such business is the ice blocks business. Depending on how big an individual may want to start, the initial capital to be invested as a micro business is not back breaking
Market:

The weather condition and the lifestyle in Nigeria have been major factors encouraging the culture of consuming cold drink, from waters in sachet to expensive premium drink. an average Nigerian is interested in drinking only what is cold, even when the weather is not hot, he either takes cold drink or nothing, hence drink sellers, especially street Hawkers go to any length to have their stock iced. It’s unfortunate about our power supply, however those in the ice business are not the only victim because every other business rely on it. As the promise by the government to supply stable power seem to be unfulfilled, businesses are beginning to seek alternative ways, to this end any investor who go out of his way to supply iced block will receive a ready patronage.

The under list are groups that are in constant need of iced block on a regular basis

Street Hawker: Seller of sachet water, pet bottle water, pet bottle soft drinks and other sachet soft drink, this capitalized on the congested traffic to sell their drink, sometime at the motor park calling out for prospective buyer.

Roadside shop/kiosk: Irrespective of the brand, drinks have appealed to people not just in transit but to those in their respective homes, shops and kiosk have always been there to supply this need from water to bear in a can or in bottle to dry gin in pet bottle, is an extensive knowledge that kiosk owners sell more when they iced their wares and is a kind of business where you make both your capital and profit in no time, it is an everyday income generating business.

Party people/Host: Nigerian’s are fun loving people hardly will any weekend goes by without  one form of celebration or another, which make them the  largest buyers for the ice block business, either you sell directly to the host of event or you sell through party planners, the party people are great assets to the business, hence this money making business has come to stay because the demand for it goes beyond just the drinking of chilled water as it were but the need goes far as in our homes and even when on transit. Looking at the two category of people here:
  • ·        With a start up capital of 20,000 (twenty thousand naira) or less, these group can start it from the comfort of their homes since is not a time consuming business. Assuming you have a freezer and generator at home, fill your generator with fuel, Purchase nylon bags or molds, these comes in different types/ sizes depending on the market price and you are good to go, nevertheless I’ll prefer a nylon bag instead of a mold for cost effectiveness.
  • ·        With a start-up capital of 500,000(five hundred thousand naira) an investors is poised to enter the ice block business breakdown

  1)    Annual rent age of shop = 60,000(sixth thousand naira)or
  2)    Annual rent of Land =80,000 (eighty thousand naira)
         3) Diesel power generating plant=100,000(one hundred                thousand naira) or
         4) Fuel generator= 60,000 (sixty thousand naira)
         5) Purchase of freezer= 80,000 (eight thousand naira)
         6) Miscellaneous, molds, nylon bag =20,000 (Twenty b                thousand naira)
         7) Construction of local made cool room with an average of           12x12=150,000(one fifty thousand naira) if you wish to                rent a land.

Turnover
When proper awareness is done a new investor can sell between 100 and 200 pieces of iced block in a day, if each goes for N50, (fifty naira) the days sales records can climb up to N10, 000, (ten thousand naira), sales rises on weekend
Though and party people scramble for ice block because they don’t want to serve their guest hot drinks, weekenders buy in large quantity and sizes.
Challenge:
Initially penetrating the market is a challenge with consistency though an investor will gain loyalty of his customers
With time you will need to have a backup generator as soon as possible because if the generator brakes down without a backup business may get crippled.

In order to survive the harsh economy, ice making business is a profitable business and can help you to attain profitability with minimum risk involved!!!
