Whether it's a Wedding or a Birthday party, a Concert or Talent show, one thing is certain, without proper planning, the event will flop. Leaving the planner with dissatisfied clients which is bad for business. Planning an event is as important as the actual event itself. Nobody wants to leave any detail unattended to when planning an event. That is why people take precautions by engaging the service of an event planner for their occasion.

For this reason, many have enriched themselves while they offer the service of event planning. Depending on the event, some event managers charge millions of dollars to undertake an event and see to it that its successful.

Starting a career in events planning and working your way to success require knowledge of the following:

Who Is An Event Planner?

An Event Planner is a professional whose duty is to prepare, organize and coordinate all the elements required for the success of an event, and then manages them at the venue of the actual event. An event planner organizes every detail of an event ranging from the choice of venue to refreshment, from the menu selection to decoration. Basically, the work of an event planner is mostly behind the scene.

Most people believe the job of event planning is an interesting, exciting one, oblivious of the fact that in order to record success, the event planner spends hours making proper arrangements and most times within a tight budget. However, all the effort becomes worthwhile when you see your event come alive. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing all the elements you put together as an event planner come together to make a successful event.

What Aspect Of Event Planning Do You Want To Specialize In?

Since there are various categories of events planning such as weddings, corporate events, fundraisers, conferences e.t.c, it's usually easier to build a career when you narrow your interests down to a particular aspect. You should put those things that interest you naturally and your personality type into consideration when choosing what aspect of event planning you want to go into. For instance, if you are a sports person, then you should probably consider planning sport events.

When you have decided on what type of event planning you want to go into, the first step you should take in building your career is to:

Acquire Adequate Knowledge About The Profession

This step is vital if you want to be a successful event planner. No one can build a career in a profession that they know little or nothing about unless they get an education about the profession. You must acquire professional knowledge about event planning. Know all there is to know about the industry.

You could take an online course in Event Planning. The benefit is that you can study at your own pace over a period of time. Or, your could enroll in any local institution that offers professional training in event planning. As long as you gain adequate knowledge about the profession and are certified, you are good to go.

Get The Experience You Need

Like the saying goes, "experience is the best teacher". Before you set-up shop as an event planner, you may need to link yourself up with an established Event planner or Event planning company. This is a good way of having on the job experience. Though you may not get recognition like you would if you were your own boss, but you will get the experience you need.

In choosing individuals/companies to work with, make sure your choice is based on the aspect of event planning you are interested in i.e fundraisers, sports, conferences and so on. This will help you maintain focus and learn faster.

Note that, professional event planners will prefer working with persons with educational background in events planning to one without such qualifications.

You may also need to do volunteer work/freelance. This will help you gain more experience of your own and possibly get connections that will help you build your career.

Start Your Own Event Planning Business

When you have taken the above steps in becoming a successful professional Event Planner, you can then start a business of your own. Though you may have to start small and then work your way to the top, you would have gotten all the training and experience you need to run an event planning business.

Starting a business is not an easy task. It takes commitment and dedication to what you do and continuous effort in improving the business. The experiences you have also gained will help you in building and sustaining the business in your quest of building a successful career in event planning.

When starting an event planning business of your own, you should:

  • Decide which market best fits your professional experience.

  • Have a registered business name.

  • Insure your business.

  • Identify the people you need to work with such as caterers, suppliers, vendors and then look for clients.

When you have taken the above steps, you can be certain that you are on the right path to building a successful career in Event planning.
